Ex-President of Mauritius Ameenah Gurib-Fakim on importance of WION Climate Summit

hello everyone we have been joined by amina garifakim the muscle former president of mauritius welcome ma'am uh what was uh what are your comments on beyond climate summit uh thank you thanks to eon for having me i think this conversation comes at the right time because this is a conversation that we do not want to put on the back burner at all it's an existential crisis for all of us especially for my country which is a small island state and it's it is going to threaten not just the developing world but it's also not developed it's also impacting the developed world so the whole world is getting impacted and the future our livelihoods at stake so we need to have this conversation exactly rightly put and when we talk about the climate crisis what do you think are the loopholes and where are the gaps um there are many gaps uh but i think one of the of the of the main gaps is that in terms of ownership on emission i think nobody wants to own up to who is actually polluting more and we also need to find the funding the appropriate support for countries to adapt and unfortunately up until we do that we will keep on talking about it because one thing that humanity has not understood is that our environment underpins our our survival on this planet and we are precisely destroying just that so the sooner we come to term with this the better is going to be for all of us and when we talk about investing in climate uh investing in to address the climate crisis how do you think the world leaders can come together on a single platform when we see a situation like russia ukraine crisis and other geopolitical tensions how do you see how do you think the world leaders can come together i think for the world leaders to come together is that first of all they have to recognize how a crisis this is wheel how an emergency it is and unfortunately we have seen how we what we have seen rightly so how the crisis has been addressed when it came to covid and i think we need a similar kind of urgency to tackle climate but because we're not seeing it we're not living it fast enough so they're not taking it seriously so this is to our own detriment ma'am one more question not on climate crisis but you like veon can you tell us why i'll be very honest with you i what i watch we on because it provides news in bite size in bite size of three to four minutes i feel that for many of the topics it is well researched and i think quickly it provides us with a picture that we all because we are living in a very fast-moving world and i think we own provides the appropriate bite-size information thank you so much [Music]
